Real-time Weather Monitoring Using Underwater Acoustics

چکیده
Acoustic rain gauges have long been espoused as a possible means of monitoring wind and rainfall in regions far from land-based measurements. The rapid provision of data from such systems could contribute to weather forecasting. This paper provides an overview of a recent equipment trial off Galway, during which wind speeds in excess of 30m s -1 were encountered. The deployment also tested the reliability of satellite and computer links for the transmission and depiction of data in near real-time. The majority of data were on our computer system within an hour of collection; this is prompt enough for incorporation within weather forecast models.

متن کاملConstrained Channel Estimation Methods in Underwater Acoustics
Underwater acoustic signal processing aims to reconstruct the shallow water acoustic channel from both direct arrival and delayed multipath reflections. This enables accurate acoustic communications in shallow water, such as between underwater autonomous vehicles (UAVs), which are essential for coastal surveillance and other applications. In this work, we take a previously implemented algorithm...

Marine robots communicating wirelessly is an increasingly attractive means for observing and monitoring in the ocean, but acoustic communication remains a major impediment to real-time control. In this paper we address through experiments the capability of acoustics to sustain highly dynamic, multi-agent missions, in particular range-only pursuit in a challenging shallow-water environment. We p...
متن کاملEvaluation of underwater acoustic propagation model (Ray theory) in a river using Fluvial Acoustic Tomography System
Underwater acoustics is widely used in many applications, such as oceanography, marine biology, hydrography, fishery, etc. Different models are introduced to simulate the underwater acoustic propagation in the oceans and the seas. In this study, the Ray Theory model is used to simulate the acoustic wave propagation in a shallow-freshwater river (Gono River) located in western part of Japan. The...
متن کاملA high-frequency warm shallow water acoustic communications channel model and measurements.
Underwater acoustic communication is a core enabling technology with applications in ocean monitoring using remote sensors and autonomous underwater vehicles. One of the more challenging underwater acoustic communication channels is the medium-range very shallow warm-water channel, common in tropical coastal regions. This channel exhibits two key features-extensive time-varying multipath and hi...
